An unnecessary medicalised option

Glowing reviews of this documentary describe it thus: " The ever important voice of the trans community is told through the experience of Georgie Stone. ...Not just a story of her gender reassignment but a story of a young woman and fighting for what she believes in. .." ..."Georgie is the real superstar - a young lady who put herself through a court case that had the potential to change the lives for the better of thousands of kids."

I see it differently - I see the story of the life of a strong, talented and probably gay child blown off course by aggressive medicalisation. What was the medical advice given to the Stone family which made them believe that the only way to manage Georgie's gender dysphoria was to turn his body into the facsimile of a girl, obliging their healthy young son to take "puberty blocking" drugs (licensed to treat a pathology known as "early onset puberty"), take female hormones for life and finally undergo complex and risky cosmetic surgery to create a prosthetic vagina rendering Georgie sterile and a lifelong medical patient in the process?

Were they not informed that: "Across all eleven long term studies ever done on gender dysphoric children, between 60% and 90% desist by puberty" That is, no longer feel uncomfortable in the bodies they were born in. "The vast majority of children who voice the desire to be the opposite sex will eventually change their minds, growing up to be gay as an adult". Perhaps the Stones were told that it was "better to have a happy daughter than a dead son" having been scared by misused transgender suicide rates. (See "The End of Gender" by Dr Debra Soh - Sexologist and neuroscientist). Whatever the reason, the Stone family was persuaded to take a radical and irreversible medicalised option.

Scientific data indicate that managed with love and care, and without resorting to medical intervention, Georgie would likely have grown up to be a healthy, untroubled and attractive gay guy who could have had children. Medical transition would always be there as an option for the adult Georgie if the gender dysphoria persisted.

I wish Georgie a happy and healthy life as a transwoman, despite the medical and social hurdles which will stand in her way, but mourn the ghost of the gay guy Georgie whose identity was denied.

A careful handling of a sensitive issue

Only the most close-minded people could be offended by this story. Maya Newell, a director with experience of transgender issues, has shown us some insight into a remarkable young girl/lady. We are lucky that there is footage of 9 year old Georgie sharing parts of her story enabling us to see the dilemma and the trauma that trans kids can feel. The contributions from her parents and twin brother, although brief, help build that story. But Georgie is the real superstar - a young lady who put herself through a court case that had the potential to change the lives for the better of thousands of kids. No spoiler - watch the doco to see whether she was successful. I highly recommend this short film, created over ten years, and handled with great sensitivity.

Beautiful and Empowering

Georgie has a beautiful story and I'm glad they are letting people see it. Letting trans people tell their own stories is a perspective that is very often ignored.

This shows bits of her journey and her activism in Australia where the courts were very much involved with each and every trans person's lives. It's a quick story and is easy to engage with. My favorite part was seeing how much support that Georgie has from her family. There is so much love in their eyes when they look at her, every kid deserves that. Watching her move into adulthood, take on her career, and advocate for herself is pure joy. Definitely recommended.

The whole trance movement is becoming antiquated, deep house and dub step is contemporary again.

I don’t hate trans because they hear voices coming from the microwave oven. But, I don’t have to agree that they hear voices from the microwave oven. I sympathize with their mental disorder. I do not have to suspend reality and agree with them.

Beautiful, moving account of Georgie's quest - to simply be herself, something most of us all too easily take for granted. Thanks Freeman.

Imagine living in a binary world. When someone has a different opinion they must be "far-right conservatards" lol. Never been a ist/phobe none right-wing person /s.

It's funny because soon as i seen that photo of him with long hair and that nose i only thought one thing. Clicked on it and "activist trans-CHILD". I'm guessing the trans activist rainbow flag waver is right-wing. That's what people think when they see the political rainbow flag. Right... ;)
